The Pennar River has its origin in the Chennakesava hills, North West of Nandi hills in Karanataka state and it is known as ‘Uttara Pinakini’. It enters into Andhra Pradesh in Anantapur District and then into Nellore District through a narrow gorge in the Velikonda range of hills.Two anicuts were constructed in Nellore District on River Pennar : 1. Sangam Anicut and 2. Nellore Anicut.
The Sangam Anicut, the Nellore Anicut along with the network of canals is called Pennar River Canal System. In addition to the main reservoirs, there are 64 Nos. of tanks in Delta area through which water is stored intermittently and supplied to the ayacut. With the completion of Somasila Project, the Delta will be getting adequate supplies to the entire ayacut, except during the failures of Monsoons. As the Sangam Anicut has become more than 100 years old, a new barrage downstream of existing barrage is under construction. The new barrage is 500 m downstream of the exiting Sangam Anicut. The project is situated at a distance of about 33Kms. from Nellore and is accessible from the left bank via SH 57. ConTec vetted and re-evaluated the technical parameters of the project for M/s Harvins Constructions Pvt. Ltd.
Lower Jurala Hydro Electric Project is a major on-going Hydro Electric Project near Mulamalla Village, Atmakur Mandal, Mahabubnagar district in Telangana state. The project is located 7.9 Kms Downstream of existing Priyadarshini Jurala Project. It’s a 240 MW project with 6 nos. Kaplan Bulb Turbines each of capacity 40 MW.
The weir crest level is at +299.00 Mtr and Maximum and Minimum tail water level are +279.65 and +273.65 Mtr. The tail race channel is 2000 mtr long with a bed width of 60 mtr and full supply depth of 8.90 mtr. The project construction was started in 2008, and already two nos. Kaplan Bulb Turbines have been commissioned. It has been found that observed tail water levels are higher than the designed levels, thus reducing the expected power output. ConTec has submitted a proposal for lowering the tail water level and augmenting the power potential or bringing it to the designed level. The proposal is being reviewed by the Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TSGENCO).
The project construction was started in 2008, and already two nos. bulb turbines have been commissioned. The first unit was synchronized in Dec 2013 and the second unit was synchronized in Jan 2014 and connected to the grid. Both the units were inundated on 30 July 2014 due to sudden floods. As an emergency measure for blocking flood water ingress and to undertake repairs in the power house due to inundation ConTec designed cofferdam With top level at +304.00 for Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TSGENCO).
The proposed hydro electric power project is a run of the river project. The proposed site is near Pentlametta Village, Parvathipuram Mandal in Vizianagaram District and it is situated at a distance of about 4.5 Kms. from Thotapalli barrage and is about 3.5 Kms upstream of the existing 1.725 Mw Sardar Power Project. The power house is proposed 500m downstream of the proposed weir on the left bank. An intake regulator is proposed in line with the weir with an approach channel leading to the power house. The tail race is proposed to be joined back into the river 850 m downstream of the proposed weir. Two nos. horizontal tubular turbines are proposed, each with design discharge of 19.50 cumecs and rated head of 4.20 mtr. The rated plant discharge is 39.00 cumecs with rated plant power output of 1.40 MW.

The Seethanagaram Anicut small hydro-electric project is proposed near Venkatabhairipuram Village, Makkuva Mandal in Vizianagaram District. The proposed project site is situated at a distance of about 17 Kms. from Bobbili town and is about 10 Kms downstream of the existing Vengalaraya Sagar reservoir project. The surplus releases from the Seethanagaram Anicut will only be utilized for power production at the proposed Seethanagaram small hydro-electric project. It is a run of the river project utilizing the differential head due to the existing Anicut. The rated design discharge is 35.00 cumecs for the scheme and 17.50 cumecs for each vertical full Kaplan turbine. The rated head for the scheme is 11.45 mtr and two units of 1.75 MW are proposed.

The proposed mini hydel project is a run of the river project utilizing the flows in the Eddu Vagu Stream. The Eddu Vagu is one of the tributaries joining the Krishna River on the right bank near Bayyaram village in Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh. The stream receives flows due to rainfall in its own catchment and excess flows from Nagarjuna Sagar Right Bank Main Canal (NSRBMC) through the regenerated flow from the irrigated lands finding escape into this stream. The head is available mainly due to longitudinal bed gradient along the course of the stream. The proposed weir site is near Bayyaram village at 3.60 km downstream of Kattamuru Bridge and power house is proposed 100 mtr downstream of weir location. The designed discharge is 52.00 cumecs and gross head is 6.5 mtr. Two units of 1.4 MW are proposed for the set up.

The proposed hydel scheme is a canal based scheme, which utilized the releases for drinking and irrigation purpose released water from Akkampally Balancing Reservoir (AKBR). The head availability is there due to level difference in Reservoir and the canal. Based on study a net head of 11.2 mtr is available. The discharge of 35 cumecs is available during irrigation period of 120 days and during remaining period 10 cumecs of discharge is available. Based on discharge and head availability, two units each of 1.5 MW capacity are proposed at the site.
