Realignment of Bokkalavagu Diversion channel for Expansion of Opencast area, Singareni Collieries, Kothagudem, Khammam District, Telangana

M/s Singareni Collieries Company Limited, Kothagudem.

The Pennar River has its origin in the Chennakesava hills, North West of Nandi hills in Karanataka state and it is known as ‘Uttara Pinakini’. It enters into Andhra Pradesh in Anantapur District and then into Nellore District through a narrow gorge in the Velikonda range of hills.

Two anicuts were constructed in Nellore District on River Pennar : 1. Sangam Anicut and 2. Nellore Anicut.

Sangam Anicut

Nellore Anicut

This is the last anicut across River Pennar. Captain D.C. Dutt selected the present site. The construction of the anicut was commenced in 1853. Sir Arthur Cotton inspected the anicut and proposed the one similar to the Krishna Anicut. The anicut was completed as per the proposal of Sir Arthur Cotton in 1859. The length of the anicut was increased from 481.889 mtr to 621.79 mtr. In 1919 the crest level was raised from 12.716 mtr to 13.021 mtr, which is by 0.305 m and top surface paved with 4 rows of cut granite wheel tracks to take the increasing traffic between both the banks of the River. Subsequently, in order to extend the irrigation facilities, the crest of the anicut was further raised to +13.109 M and 2 ft falling shutters were installed in 1941.

The Sangam Anicut, the Nellore Anicut along with the network of canals is called Pennar River Canal System. In addition to the main reservoirs, there are 64 Nos. of tanks in Delta area through which water is stored intermittently and supplied to the ayacut. With the completion of Somasila Project, the Delta will be getting adequate supplies to the entire ayacut, except during the failures of Monsoons.

As the Sangam Anicut has become more than 100 years old, a new barrage downstream of existing barrage is under construction. The new barrage is 500 m downstream of the exiting Sangam Anicut. The project is situated at a distance of about 33Kms. from Nellore and is accessible from the left bank via SH 57. ConTec vetted and re-evaluated the technical parameters of the project for M/s Harvins Constructions Pvt. Ltd.

The proposed Chitravathi Pumped Storage project envisages utilization of available head between newly constructed upper dam and existing Chitravathi reservoir as lower pond. An Underground Power House (UGPH) will be located in between two reservoirs. Both the reservoirs are interconnected through water conductor and the generator and turbines installed at the power house in between the reservoirs.

The proposed Chitravathi Pumped Storage Project is located in Tadimarri Taluk, Lingala village in Anantapur/ Kadapa district in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India (Figure 1.1: Location Map). This Place is in the border of the Kadapa District and Anantapur District. The project falls in the Lat. N 14° 36’ 16’’and Long. E 77° 56’ 19.18’’. It is located 90 Km towards west from District headquarters Kadapa. The UTM co-ordinates of Upper reservoir is 0817264m E, 1612812m N & Lower reservoir is 0818796m E, 1611969m N in 43 P zone. The Upper reservoir at present is inaccessible and the Lower is accessible from nearest road network which is at about 4 km to 5 km from State Highway SH-121. The Upper dam falls in forest area and there is no habitation observed by the WAPCOS team. Lower dam waters cater to Irrigation, Drinking water and fisheries purposes.

Eastern Gandak canal restoration works, Bihar

M/s Nagarjuna Construction Company Limited (NCC)

The 7th Five Year Plan (FY1985-1989) set forth a goal of increasing the electric power sector’s power generation capacity and annual power generation to 1,669MW and 8,200GWh, respectively. However, the Central Electric Authority estimated the peak time demand in Bihar in FY1990 at 2,200 MW(requiring an installed generation capacity of 3,666 MW)and predicted that annual demand for power generation would reach 12,485 GWh. In this case, the power shortage rate was estimated at 48% in terms of installed generation capacity and 34% in terms of volume of electricity. In Bihar State, which suffered from total power shortages, scheduled outages often took place and this situation was expected to continue

The project’s objectives were to ease power shortage in Bihar State by constructing a bypass channel for power generation along the Eastern Gandak Irrigation Canal in the northwestern part of Bihar, and conducting low-head power generation, and thereby contribute to the economic development of the region. As stated above, there was a strong need to reduce the gap between power supply and demand in Bihar State at the time of appraisal (1984). The project was also highly necessary to develop the economy in the Eastern Gandak Region, where the power plant was constructed..
