Kaveri river flows for a length of 320 km in the State. The river flows through the states Karnataka and Tamilnadu in the southeastern direction to its entrance into the Bay of Bengal near Cuddalore, Tamilnadu. Water is drawn from Cauvery river at Shiva Anicut for power generation at Shiva Power House and Shimsha Power House and also for drinking water supply to Bangalore. Out of this water drawn from Shiva Anicut about 26 cumecs is fed into Netkal Feeder for power draft at Shimsha Power House (9 cumecs) and for Bangalore water supply (17 cumecs) and about 15% increase is estimated for future demand of Bangalore water supply. The balance quantity of the water is led back into river Cauvery after power generation.

The FRL of diversion structure is fixed at + 413.80 m. The level is fixed based on the tail water level of the existing / proposed Small Hydel Scheme on the upstream side of Nandekere Small Hydel Project and head water level of the proposed Chikka Small Hydel Scheme on the downstream side. The tail water level in the short tailrace channel downstream of the power house while passing the design discharge through the units will be about + 403.50 m. Therefore, the gross head available for power generation would be 10.30 m. The loss of head through penstock, bends, trash rack, intake, gates, draft tube etc., is estimated to be about 0.50 m. Thus, the net head for power generation works out to about 9.80 m. The developer is M/s XS Hydro Energy Private Limited.

The proposed plant is at the tail end of power canal coming from Donkaraya dam feeding the water to forebay reservoir of lower sileru power house. Value Engineering

Lower Jurala Hydro Electric Project is a major on-going Hydro Electric Project near Mulamalla Village, Atmakur Mandal, Mahabubnagar district in Telangana state. The project is located 7.9 Kms Downstream of existing Priyadarshini Jurala Project. It’s a 240 MW project with 6 nos. Kaplan Bulb Turbines each of capacity 40 MW.

The weir crest level is at +299.00 Mtr and Maximum and Minimum tail water level are +279.65 and +273.65 Mtr. The tail race channel is 2000 mtr long with a bed width of 60 mtr and full supply depth of 8.90 mtr. The project construction was started in 2008, and already two nos. Kaplan Bulb Turbines have been commissioned. It has been found that observed tail water levels are higher than the designed levels, thus reducing the expected power output. ConTec has submitted a proposal for lowering the tail water level and augmenting the power potential or bringing it to the designed level. The proposal is being reviewed by the Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TSGENCO).

The project construction was started in 2008, and already two nos. bulb turbines have been commissioned. The first unit was synchronized in Dec 2013 and the second unit was synchronized in Jan 2014 and connected to the grid. Both the units were inundated on 30 July 2014 due to sudden floods. As an emergency measure for blocking flood water ingress and to undertake repairs in the power house due to inundation ConTec designed cofferdam With top level at +304.00 for Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TSGENCO).

Erstwhile APGENCO has taken up construction of weir across river Krishna about 14kms downstream of the existing Srisailam dam for storing the released water during the power generation mode. With the completion of tail pond, surplus electricity from the electricity grid would be used for pumping the water back to Srisailam reservoir and recycled for meeting peaking load on daily basis. During this time, the scheme works in pumping mode or special pump mode. The generators are designed to operate as an electric motor which rotates the turbines in reverse, and pumps water back into upper reservoir.

Thus surplus electricity is utilised to fill the reservoir, which can be used to meet the peak electricity requirements. ConTec was appointed as consultant for design and drawings in respect of right side abutment for protection of Srisailam Tailpond weir by Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO).
