Godavari River is a major waterway in central India. The upper waters of the Godavari are scarcely utilized for irrigation, but the entire delta has been turned into a garden of perennial crops by means of the anicut at Dowalaiswaram, constructed by Sir Arthur Cotton 145 years ago.
The river enters the Andhra Pradesh near Bhadrachalam and flows touching the towns such as Godhavarikhani, Rajahmundry, Kovvur, Tallapudi and Narsapur in a southeast direction until it empties into the Bay of Bengal through two mouths. Whenever the discharge in river Godavari exceeds 28,320 Cumecs the water level in the river raises above the adjoining lands in the delta, affecting crop in 4.0 lakh hectares of rich cultivable land as also affecting the livelihood of 3.5 million people. Based on the experience of past floods, it was proposed to raise the flood banks by 2.00 m over the observed maximum flood level (OMFL) of 1986 flood and widen the banks to the standards for the length of 405.50 Kms.

A total of six reservoirs are proposed as part of the project at Narlapur, Edula, Vattem, Karivena, Uddandapur and Hemasamudram. The 8.51 TMC capacity Anjanagiri reservoir proposed at Narlapur village is the first stage reservoir with a maximum bund height of 57.575m.
The earth bund formation was planned and designed with the soil excavated from the foreshore of the proposed reservoir. However, during the execution of the earth bund it was observed that the top layer of lose soils with the designed properties were in shortage and the properties of the now available borrowed soils (need to be extracted by blasting) differed from the properties of the casing soils originally proposed during design stage.
M/s ConTec DES Pvt. Ltd. was approached and assigned with the task of redesigning the 57.5 m high earth dam section with the available soil material. The earth dam was designed and the stability was checked using “Slide” software of “Rocscience”. The earth dam is under construction after obtaining approvals from CDO, Telangana.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is prepared for developing a 320 Mw run -of-river hydroelectric power project by constructing a gravity dam across River Godavari at Dummugudem village, Khammam district in Andhra Pradesh for APGENCO. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is prepared by ConTec in line with the Guidelines laid down by Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and CWC (Central Water Commission) for formulation of Detailed Project Report (DPR)s for Hydro Electric Schemes, in compliance with the requirement of Section 8 of the Electricity Act, 2003.
The 2500 Cr. project envisages construction of a gated spillway in the deepest course of River Godavari, sandwiched between concrete overflow sections (auxiliary spillways), with a bridge proposed to connect with the earth and rock fill dam on both sides to pass a design discharge of about 1,00,000 cumecs. The power house is located within the concrete non overflow section on the right bank immediately after the right concrete overflow section. The work is done for Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO) in Co-ordination with Water Resources Department, Andhra Pradesh.
The hydrographic and topographic survey works were carried out by ConTec for APGENCO, for construction of three-dimensional model for studying the hydraulic performance of the existing spillway being taken up at AP Engineering Research Laboratories.
Bathymetric Survey in the reservoir portion using water sonar sensors, GPS etc. was done. Work included bathymetric survey for 330 Ha of reservoir portion, establishment of Bench mark level at site by carrying levels from the nearest GTS bench mark adopting closed circuit levelling and other ancillary works.

Vamsadhara & Nagavali Rivers witnessed the brunt of flash floods by two successive depressions in the Bay of Bengal coupled with heavy rainfall in its catchment areas in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh during July and August 2006. The flood waters breached the banks at several locations inundating 719 villages in 38 mandals in Srikakulam District.
The total length of flood banks of Vamsadhara & Nagavali rivers in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram Districts is about 134 Kms. Out of which 33.1 Kms length of flood banks is along Nagavali River and the balance length of 100.9 Kms along River Vamsadhara. With the experience of the past floods, it was proposed to raise the flood banks by 2.00 m over the observed maximum flood level (OMFL) of 1986 & 2006 flood for Vamsadhara & Nagavali Rivers respectively.

The Pennar River has its origin in the Chennakesava hills, North West of Nandi hills in Karanataka state and it is known as ‘Uttara Pinakini’. It enters into Andhra Pradesh in Anantapur District and then into Nellore District through a narrow gorge in the Velikonda range of hills. Two anicuts were constructed in Nellore District on River Pennar : 1. Sangam Anicut and 2. Nellore Anicut.
Sangam Anicut
As severe famines occurred in the coastal Districts, the East India Company constructed delta Irrigation works across River Godavari, Krishna and Pennar in the middle of 19th century. Construction of Sangam Anicut was sanctioned in 1881. The work was commenced during 1882 and completed by 1886. It was named after the village ‘Sangam’, where the head works were constructed. In the year 1937, two-feet falling shutters were fitted over the anicut with a view to draw increased supply to Kanigiri Reservoir and to extend 10,000 Acres of first crop and 1,000 Ac of second crop under this delta. The crest level of the anicut is +33.595 mtr and top of falling shutters is +34.205 mtr. The length of anicut is 1242.37 mtr.Nellore Anicut
This is the last anicut across River Pennar. Captain D.C. Dutt selected the present site. The construction of the anicut was commenced in 1853. Sir Arthur Cotton inspected the anicut and proposed the one similar to the Krishna Anicut. The anicut was completed as per the proposal of Sir Arthur Cotton in 1859. The length of the anicut was increased from 481.889 mtr to 621.79 mtr. In 1919, the crest level was raised from 12.716 mtr to 13.021 mtr, which is by 0.305 m and top surface paved with 4 rows of cut granite wheel tracks to take the increasing traffic between both the banks of the River. Subsequently, in order to extend the irrigation facilities, the crest of the anicut was further raised to +13.109 M and 2 ft falling shutters were installed in 1941.The Sangam Anicut, the Nellore Anicut along with the network of canals is called Pennar River Canal System. In addition to the main reservoirs, there are 64 Nos. of tanks in Delta area through which water is stored intermittently and supplied to the ayacut. With the completion of Somasila Project, the Delta will be getting adequate supplies to the entire ayacut, except during the failures of Monsoons. As the Sangam Anicut has become more than 100 years old, a new barrage downstream of existing barrage is under construction. The new barrage is 500 m downstream of the exiting Sangam Anicut. The project is situated at a distance of about 33Kms. from Nellore and is accessible from the left bank via SH 57. ConTec vetted and re-evaluated the technical parameters of the project for M/s Harvins Constructions Pvt. Ltd.
